1.) As we watch progress through the film, "The Hurt Locker", how is the idea of realism being used for this movie? What kind of effects do you think this has on viewers?
In this movie, I believe that the idea of realism is being used to depict the way that the soldiers really do act when they are faced every day with the dangers that lied within the Iraqi war zone. Many former-soldiers have said or have been reported as to having PTSD effects after watching this movie because it so much like what really happened for them when they were there. I believe that this has an immense effect on the viewers, but in a very good way. The realism associated with this movie is obviously of a high standard if it causes former soldiers to bring back PTSD symptoms after watching it because of the close resemblance to what truly happened. The viewers of this movie, I hope, feel as if they are watching what really happened during the Iraqi/Afghan war.
2.) What do you think your biggest take away is from this class? What would be a suggestion to make the class better for next year?
I think the part of this class that I will take with me would be questioning what is actually true in the movies that I watch, but also what the director is trying to say with the movie. My suggestion towards next years' class to make it better would be to allow them to make their own documentary or movie project, as a class or in larger groups, and let them be the directors and writers and have others interpret what the message is behind the project.
Haley, nice blog. I also said how it would be neat for the class to make a film as to help show them filming isn't as easy as it seems to be. I like your response to the first question as I agree that the movie is very realistic and also referred to former soldiers being effected because of it.
ReplyDeleteHaley, I agree with you this movie does seem to be very realistic. It is easy to see how soldiers who have seen this movie can become somewhat traumatized by it. I also think that all of us have a different view on film now that we have taken this class. I also agree with your ideas for next years class! I think the future kids could learn a lot with that.
ReplyDeleteHaley, I like your suggestion of having the whole class work on a project together. I like the idea of working together as a film crew to see how hard it really is to put a movie together and make the viewer enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog! It was interesting how you talked about how war veterans actually experienced PTSD after watching this film. I never really thought that a movie could cause that much of an emotional experience. I found that war appeared to be really real life. I as well question the movies that I watch and pick out parts that aren't real and it bothers me when they don't have their information correct. I think that would be really cool to make your own movie! I love doing stuff like that so I think I would be an amazing firsthand learning experience!
ReplyDeleteHaley, I also learned to question the authenticity of movies. I sometimes stop and think i wonder if that's really what happened. I do think it is a good thing to question the information sometimes; as the viewer sometimes does not know the truth.
ReplyDeleteHaley, I really like the idea of having everyone in the class work together and put something together. We didn't get to do much of that in the semester that we had this class, but the debates were probably the one thing that was really different from what we normally do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Haley! I did not think of the movie as a way of seeing how soldiers act emotionally. I agree that the film class should make a film but should have to make the film of a selected historical event.
ReplyDeleteHaley I agree with you on the idea of making a film as class I would like to see how much work actually goes into the making of a movie. I also looked at the movie from a logical side that what would happen to someone who has PTSD what would happen to them if they actually saw this film would they go into shock or something even worse.
ReplyDeleteI think your right on the spot when you mention PTSD. The movie must be so realistic if they do experience flashbacks from watching this movie! I am in the same boat when you mentioned how when you were watching the film you felt as though you were watching the real events.
ReplyDeleteI greatly agree with you about the realism of the film. After interviewing a friend and a cousin whom both had two tours, I have decided that the film is very accurate. I also like your suggestion of a class project. I think if the class got together and did a film that it would be really interesting to see what happens.
